Fate, Fortune and Mysticism in the Peruvian Amazon: The Septrionic Order and the Naipes Cards
Fate, Fortune and Mysticism in the Peruvian Amazon: The Septrionic Order and the Naipes Cards by Marlene Dobkin De Rios, Ph.D. Park Street Press. Rochester, VT: 2011.
Since this is a short book, (just over a 100 pages), I had assumed it was going to be highly focused on the Naipes cards and their meanings, but in actuality the Naipes cards are a relatively small part of this book with most of the emphasis being on other practices.
The author goes into detail about the time she spent in the Peruvian Amazon back in the 70s. When she discovered the Naipes cards, which are semi similar to tarot cards. she began giving readings to the natives. Eventually she was initiated into the Septrionism tradition – and this book gives more information about this tradition.
The author writes in a clear and easy to understand manner, so that this book doesn’t read like a college text book, but more like a personal conversation reflecting on her experiences.
While the book wasn’t as centered on the instruction of using the cards as much as I thought it would be, it was definitely an interesting read while informing the reader about a completely different tradition. However, I would find it beneficial if there was some updated information to see if the traditions are still practiced the same way they were 40 years ago when the author spent her time in the Peruvian Amazon.
