Review: The Dangerous Old Woman: Myths and Stories of the Wise Woman Archetype CD Set

The Dangerous Old Woman: Myths and Stories of the Wise Woman Archetype CD Set by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, PhD. Sounds True. www.soundstrue.com . 2010.

If you loved Women Who Run with Wolves, you are sure to love this audio collection from author Clarissa Pinkola Estes.

Each of the 6 CDs in this set, features a different session and topic from Clarissa, and each one has its own great moments. Whether Clarissa is retelling a traditional story, or sharing anecdotes about some of her own family members, the experience is truly entertaining and spiritually educational, all at the same time.

While many of the stories may be new to you, you will also hear old favorites – such as Snow White and the 7 dwarves, told in a way you probably haven’t heard before – we are too used to the softening of Disney.

Clarissa is an incredible story teller who draws you into the illusion she is creating for her listeners, all the while teaching them valuable lessons about life, respect, and decency.

We have stories about vampires that teach us about seduction, a story about Clarissa’s neighbor who cuts down one of her own trees in an attempt at control, and a story of jealous girls who trick a caring giving girl and what karma brings to them, and many more that all have additional meanings and lessons for us to learn.

This is a great series for anyone who is interested in women’s issues, and would be a great substitute for a book club – instead of a book a month, how about a CD a month? (Or even a week, because once you get started you won’t want to wait a whole month before moving on!)

Clarissa points out that this compilation took her 30 years to complete – for those of us who get to listen, it has been a worth while wait.
